Fishing Report for Whittier Alaska 6/12/2017 – 6/19/2017
People often ask me, “what size fish are we going to catch?” My general response is “probably somewhere between 10 – 200 pounds”. This week that statement was pretty much on the money. Please understand that the average size fish in Alaska is 13.6 pounds. Fish over 100 pounds make up less than 1/2% of all of the halibut in the ocean. As charter operators, we generally do better than average.
This past week fishing has been all over the board.
• June 12th revealed some big lunkers! The biggest halibut that day topped the scales at over 90 pounds!
• June 13th and 14th we were off the water working on maintenance for the boat.
• June 15th the tides started to slow down causing the bite to die off a bit. The fish that were brought in were large, but there was not an overabundance of them.
• June 16th the bite turned back on, fish were jumping into the boat. Bradley and Clinton came home with all of there “any size” Halibut and 4 of their “under 28 inch” fish. Most of the any size” halibut were between 20-25 pounds.
• June 17th the weather service got it ALL WRONG. The seas were calling for seas 2 ft, wind 10 kts. It was anything but 10 and 2. We chose to back troll and picked up a few halibut and several rockers, but all and all it was a slow day fishing.
• June 18th was quite the opposite, blue skies, sunny warm and flat seas. The bite was on and the fish were big….the first three in the boat were 52 inches (70 pounds). The Black Rockfish were huge coming in at 5-8 pounds a piece.
• June 19th proved to be another fruitful day: lots and lots of fish. We limited out on both halibut and non-pelagic rockfish. Size Ranged from the 20-25 pound “any size” fish to the 8-10 pound “under 28 inch” fish. There was a lot of variety to the rockfish: Vermillian, China Rock, Quill backs, Yellow Eye, Silvergrays, and Tigers to name a few.
Please follow us on FACEBOOK as we post pictures of our fish daily.
